Celebration/Run to Remember event comes to a close
Anderson Township Park District and the Anderson Foundation for Parks and Recreation have carefully evaluated the Celebration to Remember, formerly known as the Run to Remember. The nature of this deeply personal event has presented challenges for the park district to make for both a successful community event and fundraiser for the foundation. The difficult decision has been made to discontinue the Celebration/Run to Remember.
The Celebration/Run to Remember began in 2004 with the original honoree Nancy Horn. With the success of the first year, the Horn family generously extended a public invitation to nominate a loved one to be remembered at the event. For over a decade, the park district tried to promote and foster an atmosphere where people felt welcomed to attend in honor of all loved ones, both officially and unofficially recognized at the event.
The goal of the Celebration/Run to Remember was to appeal to a larger audience and grow into a community wide fundraiser for the Anderson Foundation for Parks and Recreation Playground Fund. While significant effort has been made to overcome the challenge of increasing the appeal to the community at large, registration numbers have declined since 2012. Even as a 5K run/walk, the event did not gain the momentum we had hoped, leaving us unable to justify the road closure expense and inconveniences to our surrounding neighbors.
While this event touched all involved in a personal way, we understand there will be disappointment with this difficult decision. We want you to know we are truly grateful for all your support throughout the years. It has been our privilege to work and connect with all of the honoree families and friends. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me.
